Application Data from Recent Oil Spill to Help Determine the Environmental Impact
13 Aug 2010: LECO has released a new application note highlighting the analysis of two petroleum samples obtained from the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Using a Pegasus® 4D GCxGC-TOFMS with GERSTEL autosampler and ChromaTOF® software, the analyst was able to resolve and identify an unprecedented number of individual components in a single analysis for the ultimate in high throughput.

Fast Bioethanol Analysis Following ASTM Method D 5501 Using the New Zebron™ ZB-Bioethanol GC Column
09 Aug 2010: Standard fuel ethanol analysis can take up to 40 minutes following ASTM Method D 5501 and Europe prEN 15376. This application note indicates that the Zebron ZB-Bioethanol GC column can reduce analysis time for this method to 5 minutes while still providing complete resolution of methanol and ethanol from all denaturant components.

Analysis of Biodiesel in Accordance with EN 14214/ASTM D 6751 on Special OPTIMA GC Columns
09 Aug 2010: In this application note MACHEREY-NAGEL presents the OPTIMA® BioDiesel line. The special GC columns are specially tested for determination of methanol content as specified in EN 14110 (BioDiesel M), the separation of typical FAMEs acc. EN 14103 (BioDiesel F) and the analysis of free glycerol and residues of glycerides in Biodiesel in accordance with EN 14105 (BioDiesel G).

Analysis of Samples from the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill by GCxGC-TOFMS
20 Jul 2010: The recent oil spill off the coast of Louisiana, in the Gulf of Mexico, is the largest oil spill in US history. The ability to identify the chemical make-up oil samples from this spill will be an important tool utilized by those responding to this event. This application note demonstrates the ability of LECO's Pegasus 4D GCxGC-TOFMS system to identify a large number of components in a single analysis.

Rapid Screening Method for PAH Samples
07 Jul 2010: Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that are carcinogenic and mutagenic in humans. This application note represents the fastest screening method available for Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) using a conventional GC system. The narrow bore GC columns do not require any special hardware or modification to the GC system.

Considerations for Narrow Bore GC Columns
01 Jul 2010: This application note presents a solution for speeding up chromatography methods using Narrow Bore (0.10mm ID) columns. The columns have a smaller capacity than standard columns and achieve higher efficiency and less band broadening.

Measuring Environmental Volatile Organic Compounds by U.S. EPS Method 8260B with Headspace Trap GC/MS
12 Dec 2009: This application note demonstrates the use of a new sample-introduction technology (incorporated in the PerkinElmer® TurboMatrix™ HS-110 Trap) for U.S. EPA Method 8260B. The TurboMatrix HS-110 Trap is an enhanced static headspace system with a built-in trap that pre-concentrates and focuses VOCs prior to injection into the GC.

Increasing Sample Throughput in Method 8260 Using the Novel Oven Design of Clarus 600 GC/MS
11 Dec 2009: The technique presented in this application note utilizes modifications to typical instrumental parameters to dramatically increase sample throughput. This technique will also allow the laboratory to meet all of the QA/QC requirements of Method 8260 and increase its instrumental throughput by nearly 50%.
PerkinElmer, Inc.
Fast Separation of Chlorinated Pesticides Using Zebron™ GC Columns
01 Dec 2009: In this application note, two column pairs are presented for organochlorine pesticide analysis. The Zebron ZB-MultiResidue-1 and -2 pair show additional benefits of improved resolution and baseline resolution of all compounds. Fast analysis of chlorinated pesticides in under 10 minutes results in shorter cycle times and improved productivity and greater confidence.

Extraction of Phenols from Waste Water Using Micro Extraction by Packed Sorbent (MEPS)
28 Aug 2009: This application note demonstrates the usefulness of MEPS for dilute samples with a relatively simple matrix, a surrogate wastewater sample was prepared from clear phenol free waste water spiked with either 25 ppb or 250 ppt phenols. This shows that MEPS elution is compatible with GC and LC inlets making it ideal for integration into an automated sampling system for on-line SPE.
